Christopher Columbus Monument

The monument, conceived by Italian-American groups in Easton, was dedicated Dec. 14, 1930. It is not far from its current spot just north of the free bridge. It cost about $13,000 to build the monument then, which translates into about $175,000 adjusted for today. Columbus actually had struck his flourishing pose closer to the Delaware, on the other side of the wall, until he suffered damage in the 1955 flood.

The monument was weakened when the entire piece was submerged in the great flood and was moved closer to the street in 1964. The 9-feet-high bronze statue was created by artist Giuseppe Donato.
